Ursuline Sisters Working at the Border in El Paso, TX

Three Ursuline Sisters, Yuli Oncihuay, Kathy Neely (Louiseville, KY) and Carol Reamer (Toledo, OH) responded to a requestCourtesy of the Ursuline Sisters of LouisvilleCourtesy of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville from the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) to volunteer with refugees seeking asylum in the United States. These three Sisters worked for many years together in Peru and found this to be an opportunity they could not miss.

The Sisters volunteered in the Casa del Refugiado of Annunciation House founded in 1978 in El Paso, TX. Refugee families are brought here by volunteers in a bus. Upon arrival other volunteers greet the guests, help them with their documents, dispense articles like blankets, towels, personal items, and take the guests to the dormitory and showers. The Salvation Army supplies the three meals each day which the volunteers help to serve.

One of the volunteer activities was to prepare card for Mothers’ Day.

The refugees connect with their sponsor families who purchase the bus or plane tickets to their destination. The refugees come from Cuba, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and other countries.
The Ursuline Sisters left for Texas on April 30 and return the beginning of June. Look for more next month on Sister Carol’s experience.
