Partners in Mission - Nicole Dewalt

Posted 8/31/2020

Bringing Nicole DeWalt into the Ursuline Center as a volunteer with Ursuline activities, then part-time as our receptionist as well as activities and assessment assistant, has been a win-win for Nicole and the Sisters, Priests and Associates who reside at the Center.

On a cold day in February 2019, Nicole stopped by the Ursuline Center to inquire if any volunteer assistance was needed. Jess Torda-Gamby, Human Resource Director and Life Enrichment Director, was at the reception desk at that time and was in fact in need of help with Activities. Nicole volunteered for six months, then in August 2019 was hired on staff to work at the reception desk, answering phones and greeting those who are permitted to enter the building.

The pandemic has presented new challenges at the Center. Since March 2020, Nicole also has been screening employees prior to the start of their shifts and closely monitoring those who come to the Center.

No two days are the same. Nicole assists with quarterly and new resident assessments. She also can be seen leading Bingo, passing out ice cream on a hot day, having one-on-one visits with the residents, going for walks with residents outside, and helping with other activities, among many other things.

Warm and kind-hearted, it’s no surprise that Nicole loves helping people. “It’s so nice to visit with the Sisters and other residents, see their smiling faces, and simply listen and enjoy one other’s company,” she says. “The Sisters have so many years of experience; I really enjoy sharing stories with them.”

Nicole, Doug, her husband of 25 years, and their two teen-aged boys reside nearby in Ottawa Hills. Nicole and Doug have a family lighting business that sells UVB lamps. In her free time, Nicole enjoys running and walking. “This is a gorgeous area that we have to exercise,” she says.

Thank you, Nicole, for stopping by that cold February day and opening yourself to join our Ursuline mission.
