Ursuline Sisters of Toledo, Ohio

In Memoriam

Sister Bernarda Breidenbach, OSU

(Carol Ann Breidenbach)

Sister Bernarda Breidenbach, OSU (Carol Ann Breidenbach), 78, a dedicated educator and administrator in the Diocese of Toledo, died January 27, 2025 at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio.

Sister Bernarda was the daughter of the late Bernard and Anna (Kimmet) Breidenbach.  Born and raised on a farm in Tiffin, Ohio, Sister Bernarda and her family were parishioners at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin.  She entered the Ursuline Convent of the Sacred Heart in September of 1964.

Sister Bernarda graduated from St. Ursula Academy, Toledo, Ohio in 1964.  She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the former Mary Manse College in 1973, a Master’s degree in Religious Studies from Aquinas College, Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1979, and an Administration Certification from the University of Toledo.  She also pursued advanced studies courses at Dayton University and Bowling Green State University.

Holding a special fondness for children and teachers, including parish ministry, Sister Bernarda spent her entire teaching and principalship career in the Diocese of Toledo Catholic schools.  She taught at St. John in Point Place, St. Mary in Tiffin, Good Shepherd in Oregon, as well as St. Patrick of Heatherdowns and St. Agnes in Toledo.  Sister Bernarda then held principal positions at Queen of Peace (now known as Queen of Apostles) in Toledo, Immaculate Conception in Bellevue, and St. Richard School in Swanton.

Recognized for her dedication, Sister Bernarda was named “One of Ten Outstanding Teachers in the Toledo Diocese” in 1980 and “Outstanding Administrator/Principal” for the entire Toledo area by the Toledo Association for the Education of Young Children in 2006.

Sister Bernarda’s vocation to teach became apparent early in her youth.  In an old chicken coop on her family farm, Carol would try to hold ‘class’ for a few of her brothers using a stick as a pointer on a makeshift easel.  Her ‘students’ now light-heartedly take credit for helping Sister Bernarda hone her attributes of patience and perseverance for what would become a lifetime of teaching and ministry.

In addition to classroom teaching, principalship and parish ministry, Sister Bernarda could be found cheering her students on at sporting events, working on festival planning or rooting for the Michigan Wolverines.  She enjoyed traveling to places such as Europe and taking river cruises, and the fishing pole she kept in her trunk of her car afforded her quiet reflection and relaxation at the local reservoir.

Sister Bernarda served as Councilor on the leadership team of the Toledo Ursulines from 2006 - 2010 and 2020 - 2022, and as President from 2010 – 2014.

She was close to her family whom she loved dearly, especially all her nieces and nephews, offering advice on various issues they faced.  Family gatherings were not to be missed.

The more recent past presented new challenges to her health and mobility.  True to her character and vocation, Sister Bernarda turned the page to a new ministry – providing care and hope to fellow residents at Rosary Care Center.  Aboard her motorized wheelchair, she visited and ministered to others with her positive attitude.

Sister Bernarda is survived by her sister Marilyn (Edwin) Kokosky, brothers Marion (Gayle) Breidenbach, James (Diana) Breidenbach, Bernard (Sharon) Breidenbach, Jr., and Kenneth (Betty) Breidenbach, her loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, and the Sisters and the Associates of the Ursuline Community.  Memorials may be made to the Ursuline Convent, St. Ursula Academy or Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Sister M. Antoinette Cosentino

Sister M. Antoinette Cosentino, the longest-living Toledo Ursuline, died November 8, 2020 at Ursuline Center at the age of 103.

Five months before her death, Sister Antoinette had celebrated her birthday, pandemic style, with family and friends holding signs, waving and singing ‘happy birthday’ from outside the Ursuline Center windows. “My friends keep me going with their prayers,” she often said.

Sister Antoinette taught at St. Angela Hall, St. Thomas, Good Shepherd, St. John, St. Agnes, and Rosary Cathedral schools in Toledo; St. Rose in Perrysburg; St. Gerard in Lima; Nazareth Hall in Grand Rapids, Ohio; and St. Mary’s School in Tiffin. Sister Elizabeth Marie Brell - In Memoriam - Ursuline Sisters of Toledo, Ohio
Sister Elizabeth Marie Brell

Sister Elizabeth Marie Brell, 94, died at the Ursuline Center on March 29, 2021. Throughout Sister Liz’s long life she was passionate about family, education, teaching, travel, art, and her many, many friends of all ages and backgrounds.

Sister Elizabeth Marie began her teaching career at St. Angela Hall and continued at Good Shepherd, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. John, and St. Charles schools in Toledo; St. Mary, Tiffin; and St. Rose, Perrysburg. She served as Principal at St. Gerard, Lima, and at St. John and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She taught Art at Central Catholic High School. Sister Elizabeth Marie served on the Toledo Diocesan Liturgical Commission and was a co-founder of the Toledo Diocesan Elementary Principals’ Association.

Leaving the education field after 32 years, Sister Elizabeth Marie became a Licensed Practical Nurse, spending 17 years at the former Riverside Hospital and St. Charles Hospital (Toledo), where she especially loved working second or third shift in the nursery so she could rock the newborns. When Sister Liz retired from nursing, she pursued a variety of interests, primarily in art. She drew, painted, and made note cards (sometimes on paper she made). Her love for art began while she was in late grade school, when she took art lessons at the Toledo Museum of Art on Saturday mornings. Many years later she enrolled in a pottery course, soon becoming an accomplished potter. She loved these new mediums of clay, porcelain and stoneware, as well as the new friends she made. One particular piece she created, a “dwelling place” designed to replicate an African hut, was one of two pieces, chosen from among 50, to be exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art. She made hundreds of bowls, platters, vases, and other primarily utilitarian pieces – selling much of her work each summer at The University of Toledo’s Art on the Mall, but also graciously sharing her work with her extended family. Today these cherished pieces are still in use or on display at most of her nieces’ and nephews’ homes.

Sister Liz loved to travel, especially in Western Europe, but was always up for a road trip anywhere, either driving alone or with friends. A special destination for many years was Muskegon, Michigan to visit her sister Pat and family.

In her later years, Sister Liz was chairman of the Ursuline Center Building Committee, oversaw the community’s vast collection of artwork, and enjoyed sharing her knowledge of that artwork and its artists with others. With her fine eye for design, Sister Liz decorated the Ursuline Center lobby and chapel throughout the year.

Sister Elizabeth Marie was preceded in death by her parents; Clarence and Bernice (Fike) Brell, sisters, Mary Louise “Pat” (Ronald, deceased) Byersmith and Barbara “Poochie” (Peter, deceased) Weston; brother, R. Michael “Mike” (Ursula, deceased) Brell; sister-in-law, Joanne Seidel Brell; and niece, Rebecca Brell Heater. She is survived by her brother, Thomas “Tom”; numerous loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, with more on the way; and her Sisters and Associates of the Ursuline Community.

Sister Elizabeth Marie, who celebrated 70 years as an Ursuline, donated her body to The University of Toledo, College of Medicine.
